Taliban Forces Close Hekmatyar’s Office

24 March 2024

Today, the Taliban authorities have taken action to shut down the office of Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, a significant political figure, in Kabul.

Karim Amin, representing Hekmatyar’s office, conveyed to the media that the decision was made to close the office and relocate the leader’s residence.

According to a report from Keshwarnews, the Taliban have asserted that both the office and residence of Hekmatyar are properties designated for the Ministry of Defence.

Hekmatyar has recently voiced concerns regarding the legal and political legitimacy of the Taliban regime, advocating for clarity on the foundation of the system’s legitimacy. He emphasized the importance of the people’s will in determining the Islamic leadership and called for an end to conflicts between various religious factions. Notably, Hekmatyar’s statements coincide with heightened tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan.

This marks the second instance of the Taliban imposing restrictions on the activities of Hekmatyar, the leader of Hizb-e-Islami. Hekmatyar narrowly survived an armed attack last year, attributing the incident to criticisms of the ruling regime.

Interestingly, Hekmatyar’s commentary aligns with the escalating tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan, further complicating regional dynamics. The recurrent imposition of restrictions on Hekmatyar’s Islamic party activities suggests a consistent pattern of confrontations with the Taliban.

Hekmatyar’s resilience following the attack underscores the ongoing friction between his faction and the Taliban-led government.
