Lavrov Criticizes US Anti-Terrorism Efforts in Afghanistan During Last Two Decades
25 March 2024
In the aftermath of a tragic concert attack near Moscow, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized the United States’ approach to combating terrorism during its prolonged presence in Afghanistan.
Lavrov, speaking to TASS, highlighted that the U.S. intervention in Afghanistan, initiated with international support post-9/11, failed to effectively address terrorism.
He noted that Russia had offered immediate assistance to the U.S. following the September 11 attacks, emphasizing global consensus on the need for accountability. However, Lavrov pointed out that over two decades, the U.S. presence in Afghanistan not only failed to eradicate terrorism but inadvertently contributed to the rise of groups like Al-Qaeda.
He suggested that certain U.S.-created structures in Afghanistan were later exploited to destabilize regions beyond Afghanistan. Lavrov’s comments resonate amid recent events, including a devastating concert attack in Russia claiming over 135 lives.
