Germany: Authorities Apprehend Suspect in Halle for Illegal Explosives Possession and Threats

08 April 2024

Authorities in the eastern German city of Halle disclosed on Sunday that they had apprehended and pressed charges against a 36-year-old individual for the illicit utilization of explosives following the discovery of what appeared to be an explosive device primed for detonation during a sweep of his residence. On Saturday, in the vicinity of midday, law enforcement responded to the man’s domicile following reports from neighbors alleging that he was hurling racial slurs at passersby from his window while brandishing a firearm, alongside threats to bomb neighbors perceived as foreign. Upon arrival, police determined that the intoxicated individual’s firearm was, in fact, a replica. However, upon inspecting his residence, they observed several dubious items, prompting the immediate dispatch of a bomb disposal unit and canines trained to detect explosives. Approximately 50 residences were evacuated during the search.Specialists are presently evaluating the potential threat posed by the device. The matter has been transferred to the Saxony-Anhalt State Criminal Office (LKA) for further inquiry. In 2019, Halle was the site of a fatal racially motivated assault, during which a white supremacist claimed the lives of two individuals after being thwarted in an attempt to breach a synagogue. The perpetrator professed intentions to inflict harm upon as many Jewish individuals as possible using firearms and explosives.
