India Commends Taliban’s Efforts to Restore Property Rights for Afghan Hindu and Sikh Communities

13 April 2024

According to recent reports, the Taliban has initiated measures to return property rights to the Hindu and Sikh communities in Afghanistan.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal expressed optimism about this development during his weekly media briefing, highlighting it as a positive step. The Taliban has established a commission to facilitate the return of privately seized land to its rightful. This decision follows discussions between India’s representative for Afghanistan, J P Singh, and senior Taliban officials, including a meeting with Taliban’s foreign minister, Amir Khan Muttaqi, last month. While India has not officially recognized the Taliban regime, it continues to advocate for an inclusive government in Kabul and insists on preventing Afghan soil from becoming a base for terrorist activities. India also emphasizes the importance of providing humanitarian aid to address the ongoing crisis in Afghanistan. In June 2022, India resumed its diplomatic presence in Kabul by deploying a technical team to its embassy, after temporarily withdrawing officials due to security concerns following the Taliban’s takeover in August 2021.
