UN Report: Restrictions on Female Employment Cost Afghanistan’s Economy
02 May 2024
The Women’s Division of the United Nations has issued a report highlighting the detrimental impact of restrictions on female employment within non-governmental organizations on Afghanistan’s economic landscape. The document reveals a decrease in the percentage of women working from their homes, dropping from 24 percent in September 2023 to 18 percent presently. This represents a notable six-point reduction within the surveyed organizations’ female workforce operating remotely.
The analysis further elaborates that a significant number of women are actively engaged in various critical sectors, including education, healthcare, banking, small businesses, and commerce, across both the private and public domains.
Moreover, a preceding report by the United Nations Development Program had identified that such employment constraints on women have inflicted approximately one billion dollars’ worth of economic losses on Afghanistan.
