As the Doha meeting nears, special envoys from various nations, especially regional representatives, have been actively engaging in discussions about Afghanistan. The Doha meeting of special envoys on Afghanistan is slated for next month.
In a recent development, the Chinese special envoy for Afghanistan, Yue Xiaoyong, hosted Uzbekistan’s special envoy, Ismatullah Irgashev, in Beijing on Wednesday. Both envoys committed to working closely on Afghanistan’s peace and reconstruction efforts.
Analysts stress the importance of building a regional consensus and aligning views on the Afghan situation ahead of the Doha meeting. Official from various countries are looking to protect and promote their own interests at the Doha conference.
Ahead of the third Doha meeting hosted by the UN, Russia’s special envoy for Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, and J.P. Singh, Joint Secretary in India’s Ministry of External Affairs, held discussions in New Delhi on Wednesday, focusing on the conditions faced by the Afghan people, according to Indian media reports.
Kabulov remarked that while Russia’s relations with the Taliban are improving, there remain political constraints. “I do not imply that the Taliban are our foremost allies, but it is clear they are not our adversaries. We maintain relations with the Taliban through our embassy in Kabul,” he stated.
In an interview with TASS news agency, Kabulov mentioned that the Taliban in Afghanistan are no longer considered enemies by his country and that the Taliban have expressed trust in Moscow. “The Taliban openly state that they trust Russia as the successor of the former Soviet Union,” he commented.
The third round of meetings involving the United Nations and special envoys from various countries on Afghanistan is scheduled for the end of next month. The appointment of a UN special envoy is expected to be a key topic at the meeting, a position the Taliban has been opposing.
