United Nations Commemorates World Press Freedom Day in Afghanistan

04 May 2024

In a significant observation of World Press Freedom Day, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has extended its tribute to the courageous journalists of Afghanistan.

Amidst the challenges and risks they face, these journalists persist in their mission to keep the nation informed. Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Afghanistan, Roza Otunbayeva, emphasized the critical role these journalists play in fostering an informed, prosperous nation, and in driving progress across multiple sectors including education, health, and governance.

According to Otunbayeva, the dedication of Afghan journalists to disseminating truth and facilitating informed dialogue is fundamental to the nation’s growth and the well-being of its citizens. She stressed the importance of celebrating, supporting, and protecting these individuals, who are pivotal in shaping a transparent, accountable, and progressive Afghanistan.

This recognition by UNAMA underscores the global imperative to uphold press freedom and safeguard journalists, ensuring they can perform their duties without fear of reprisal. As Afghanistan continues to navigate complex social and political challenges, the role of free press remains more crucial than ever.
