Taliban Establishes Investigative Delegation to Address Protests in Badakhshan Province

05 May 2024

The Taliban leadership has officially designated a delegation to conduct a thorough investigation into an ongoing anti-Taliban demonstration, marking its second day in the northeastern province of Badakhshan.

Under the guidance of the Taliban’s chief of army staff, Fasihuddin Fitrat, the formation of this delegation was confirmed through a formal announcement by the Taliban’s spokesperson, Zabiullah Mujahid. The statement from Mujahid also disclosed the cultivation of poppies in certain regions within Badakhshan, indicating a broader context of issues being addressed by the Taliban administration.

This investigative move comes in response to the consecutive gatherings of numerous individuals in the Argo district, a phenomenon mirroring a similar stance taken by inhabitants of Darayim district within the same province. These protests signify a growing unrest and opposition towards the Taliban’s rule in these areas, highlighting a critical moment of civil expression in the region.

The establishment of this delegation by the Taliban is an indication of their acknowledgment of the protests and suggests a potential shift towards addressing the grievances of the population in Badakhshan. The outcomes of this investigation and the Taliban’s subsequent actions will be closely watched by both national and international observers, as they could have significant implications for the stability and human rights situation in Afghanistan.
