More Than 23 Million People in Afghanistan in Urgent Need of Humanitarian Assistance

07 May 2024

The United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has declared an urgent need for humanitarian support for approximately 23.7 million individuals in Afghanistan for the year 2024.

In a statement released on Sunday, May 5th, UNAMA highlighted that, notwithstanding a decrease in violence, the demand for substantial humanitarian aid persists across the nation. The announcement detailed that among those in dire need, there are 5.9 million women and 5.4 million men.

Furthermore, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has previously expressed concern over the rapidly worsening humanitarian conditions within Afghanistan.

The situation has notably deteriorated following the Taliban’s assumption of control, characterized by increased forced deportations and a notable reduction in international aid.

Afghan returnees from neighboring countries are particularly vulnerable, grappling with significant challenges such as scarcity of food, lack of clean drinking water, inadequate shelter, and limited employment prospects.

Recent events, including a surge in the expulsion of migrants, seismic activities, and other natural calamities like floods, have intensified the immediate need for humanitarian assistance in the region.
