The Continuing of Crisis in Badakhshan

08 May 2024

Following the unsuccessful attempt by a delegation to quell the protests in Badakhshan, the Taliban dispatched additional troops to Argo and Draim. The Taliban’s spokesperson declared yesterday that the protests in Badakhshan had concluded and that the demonstrators’ demands would be addressed. However, reports from the region suggest that the protests have evolved into a new phase. An attack on a Taliban convoy in Faizabad today has intensified the conflict.

Protesters in Badakhshan are demanding the removal of non-native forces from the area’s villages and districts. They accuse Taliban forces of exhibiting ethnic bias, confusion, and violence, including conducting house searches without regard for local social customs and traditions. The Taliban, however, have attempted to portray the Badakhshan protests solely as a drug-related issue.

The significance of Badakhshan to the Taliban is well understood. The province’s population of two million, its challenging geography, shared borders with Central Asian countries, Pakistan, and China, rich mineral resources, and its role in the regional terrorism network and narcotics trade, render Badakhshan a strategically vital region.

Indeed, the security and stability of northern, northeastern, and parts of eastern Afghanistan are contingent upon the situation in Badakhshan. Consequently, the Taliban are adamantly opposed to relinquishing control of the province to local forces. This stance is influenced by a longstanding distrust of local forces, which played a significant role in the two-decade-long conflict with the Taliban.

The crisis in Badakhshan appears poised to escalate and persist. The Taliban’s cautious approach, juxtaposed with the protesters’ growing frustration, suggests a resolution is not imminent. Should the Taliban resort to violence, suppression, and the arrest and torture of protesters in an effort to manage the situation, there is no doubt that the crisis will escalate further and potentially spiral out of their control.
