Taliban Government Seeks Iran’s Chabahar Port Amidst Relations Uncertainty
21 March 2024
According to a report by The Diplomat Magazine, in a bid to diversify trade routes and reduce dependence on Pakistan, the Afghan government has approached Iran for potential use of the Chabahar port. This move reflects Kabul’s efforts to anticipate Pakistan’s actions and diminish its leverage over Afghanistan. If successful, this arrangement could offer policy alternatives to the ruling Taliban regime and lessen reliance on Islamabad.
Pakistan, however, views this development as a threat to its strategic importance, particularly concerning its aspirations to serve as a trade passage connecting Central Asia with the world. The proposed Iran-Afghanistan corridor could undermine Pakistan’s regional influence and hinder its plans for economic growth. Additionally, it could limit Pakistan’s leverage in addressing the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) issue.
Despite Pakistan’s efforts, including diplomatic outreach and appeals at the United Nations, the Taliban remains steadfast in its pursuit of alternative solutions. The situation underscores the complexities of regional dynamics and the challenges facing Pakistan in its relations with Afghanistan amidst ongoing political and economic turmoil.
