Baloch Militant Group Launches Large-Scale Assault on Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Posts in Sistan and Baluchistan

05 April 2024

Jaish al-Adl, identified as a Baloch militant organization, conducted a significant assault on Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps installations in Sistan and Baluchistan on Wednesday night.Reportedly, suicide units from Jaish al-Adl targeted Iranian security forces in Chabahar and Rask cities of Sistan and Baluchistan, breaching the Chabahar naval headquarters. The engagement between Iran’s security forces and Jaish al-Adl militants endured for several hours, during which Iranian forces deployed drones and helicopters to confront the assailants. Iranian authorities have indicated that the terrorists held civilians hostage. The Iranian Deputy Interior Minister informed the IRNA news agency that 18 terrorists participated in the attack, resulting in the death of 16 assailants, with some discarding their suicide belts during the confrontation. The Iranian Deputy Interior Minister suggested, without elaborating, that the Jaish al-Adl assault aimed to alleviate pressure on Israel. This incident marks the most extensive terrorist operation by Jaish al-Adl within Iran. Previously, the group had claimed responsibility for the killing of 11 Iranian soldiers in Sistan and Baluchistan in December. Iran’s Interior Minister, Ahmad Wahidi, attributed the terrorists’ ingress into Iran to Pakistan.Past attacks by Jaish al-Adl have sparked military tensions between Pakistan and Iran. On January 16, Iran conducted artillery strikes on Jaish-e-Adl facilities in Pakistan. In response to the airspace violation, Pakistan launched retaliatory measures on Iranian territory. Following heightened tensions and military and diplomatic exchanges, both nations eventually restored normalcy in relations. However, the recent incident appears to have strained relations anew.Jaish al-Adl was established by Salahuddin Farooqi in 2012, opposing Iran’s backing of Bashar al-Assad. Formerly known as Jundullah and led by Abdul Malik Rigi, the group saw Rigi apprehended by Iranian security forces in Afghanistan in 2010 while attempting to travel from Dubai to Kyrgyzstan. Rigi was subsequently executed after a few months.
