Germany Police Report: Violent crime reaches 15-year high

07 April 2024

Germany experienced a significant surge in violent crime in 2023, the first year post-pandemic restrictions.
According to police data released by Welt am Sonntag, violent crime rose by 8.6%, reaching a 15-year peak of 214,099 cases.
Key Points:
Overall crime increased by 5.5% to 5.94 million cases compared to the previous year, and 9.3% compared to pre-pandemic levels.
Suspect apprehensions rose by 7.3%, with 41.3% lacking German citizenship. Notably, 402,514 were refugees, asylum seekers, or illegal entrants.
Theft offenses, comprising a third of all crimes, surged by 10.7%. Berlin witnessed a 35.2% increase in burglaries, becoming the state with the highest crime rate.
Clearance rate for all crimes resulting in charges stood at 58.4%.
Analysis:
Politicians attribute the rise in violent crime to societal shifts, exacerbated by global conflicts such as those in Gaza and Ukraine. Other contributing factors include inflation, increased mobility post-pandemic, and migration.
Conclusion:
Addressing the surge in crime requires a comprehensive approach involving law enforcement, social policies, and international cooperation to ensure public safety and cohesion.
