Taliban Regime Implements Ban on Facebook in Afghanistan
07 April 2024
The Taliban administration in Afghanistan has announced the shutdown of Facebook. Based on Keshwarnews report, Najibullah Haqqani Taliban Minister for Communications and Information Technology on Tuesday said in an interview with Tolo news and emphasized the need for educational pursuits among the youth, discouraging their engagement with social networks. Highlighting concerns over the scientific literacy and education levels of the youth, Haqqani underscored the perceived drawbacks of social media engagement, citing it as a drain on both time and resources. This decision, according to Haqqani, aligns with a broader policy to safeguard national interests. Moreover, Haqqani referenced past financial transactions between telecommunications networks and the Taliban, suggesting a historical context to the decision. Meanwhile, Facebook has notably tightened restrictions on terrorist groups, including the Taliban, and has taken measures to block content supportive of such entities. This stance is consistent with Facebook’s policy against supporting or promoting terrorist organizations. Additionally, Twitter remains a prominent platform for the Taliban despite these actions.
