Taliban Bolsters Security Measures at Kandahar Mosque Amid ISIS Fears

08 April 2024

According to recent reports from local media outlets, the Taliban has initiated the construction of fortified barriers, known as T-walls, encircling the Eidgah Mosque in Kandahar.
This undertaking stems from apprehensions regarding potential security threats posed by ISIS during Eid ul-Fitr prayers.Footage reveals the Taliban engaged in the erection of security fortifications around the Eidgah Mosque in Kandahar, driven by concerns that Hibatullah Akhundzada, the group’s paramount leader, may be targeted by ISIS militants during the Eid observances. Afghanistan International, citing its sources, corroborates these developments. In footage dated Sunday, April 7th, military vehicles belonging to the Taliban were observed relocating security barriers around the Eidgah Mosque in Kandahar. Witnesses attest to the Taliban establishing a formidable perimeter around the mosque premises with these defensive structures.
Moreover, reports indicate that Taliban authorities voiced apprehension regarding potential ISIS incursions during Eid prayers in Kandahar during a security conclave held on Friday, April 5th. It was underscored in the meeting that ISIS operatives could pose a direct threat to Taliban leadership during the Eid proceedings in Kandahar. Consequently, Taliban officials have resolved to finalize the venue for Eid prayers one day prior to the occasion. Additionally, heightened security and intelligence protocols are slated for implementation to ensure the safe conduct of Eid prayers in Kandahar. However, it was underscored in the meeting that the Taliban security forces would make the final determination regarding the venue for Hibatullah Akhundzada’s Eid prayers on the eve of Eid. Furthermore, the Taliban assembly emphasized the imperative of vigilance, cautioning against potential ISIS infiltration among the populace.According to the report, Taliban authorities have petitioned the management of the central prison in Kandahar to enhance security measures during the Eid period. This plea follows a recent suicide attack outside a Kabul Bank branch in Kandahar, attributed to ISIS, resulting in the tragic loss of at least 43 lives and injuries to 45 others.
