Hekmatyar Condemns Doha Meeting as Repeat of Unsuccessful Bonn Conference
28 May 2024
Gulbuddin Hekmatyar, leader of the Hezb-e Islami party, has criticized the forthcoming Doha conference, likening it to the ineffective Bonn conference. The United Nations is hosting the event on June 30, which aims to gather special envoys from various countries to formulate a unified strategy for addressing Afghanistan’s ongoing crisis.
Hekmatyar, in a recent post on X, condemned the Doha conference for its exclusionary nature. “The third Doha meeting is a repetition of the unsuccessful Bonn conference, intended to appoint another figure like Benon Sevan or Lakhdar Brahimi, preferred by the United States. It is universally recognized that the Afghan crisis cannot be resolved without forming an inclusive government,” he wrote.
The Taliban has stated that its attendance at the Doha conference is conditional on the acceptance of its terms. Reports suggest that one key condition is for the Taliban to act as the sole representative of Afghanistan at the meeting.
The agenda for the Doha conference remains uncertain. The Taliban hopes the discussions will include topics such as counter-narcotics, economic development, and climate change.
Envoys from 25 countries are expected to attend the Doha conference.
